Unless you are lucky enough to work from the comfort of your own home, there is a good chance that you will need to commute to your job each day. Whether you work for a sports club or a solicitor, you’ll need to find the best way of travelling to work which may be anything from walking to driving. The majority of people tend to use their cars or use public transport, and there are a number of ways to stay safe using both of these transportation types. Here are just a few things you might want to keep in mind.

Public Transport

Keep possessions close by: When you’re on the bus, train or tram, it is important to keep an eye out on your possessions. Things can be stolen or moved in the blink of an eye, so it really is important to keep them out of the way of others. If you have expensive technology on your person such as a smartphone or music player, use them discreetly as you don’t want to make yourself a target for theft.

Report anything unusual: Transport companies advise their customers to report any unusual behaviour or packaging to a member of staff. It’s always best to be safe than sorry as you never really know what dangers lie around the corner. If a person on the train or bus is being unlawful or menacing, you should also report this as soon as possible.

Keep up-to-date: You might want to check the current service operations before you set off from home or the office. Delays are sometimes unavoidable, but it can certainly help you to make alternative arrangements more efficiently.

Driving

Watch out for other motorists: Monday morning isn’t the best time for driving as you have just been woken up early by your alarm clock and the same goes for other motorists on the road. That means you should take extra care with your manoeuvres and make sure you check your mirrors enough to keep yourself and others safe.

Be perceptive of hazards: As a driver you will need to be aware of hazards that are common during the peak commuter hours. You’ll see pedestrians making their own way to work as well as others squeezing in an early morning jog before they make their own way into the office. If you pass schools on your journey, remember to kill your speed when you drive past as there may be children in the road.

Keep up-to-date: It is a good idea to check the weather to see whether there are any warnings or alerts which might affect your journey. In some parts of the country, certain roads may be closed when there are adverse conditions such as high wind or heavy snow predicted. You may also want to check current traffic alerts to see whether you will experience any disruption due to accidents or construction.
