It’s almost impossible to pinpoint a single highlight of a tour of Italy. Travelers have been making their way there for centuries, and whether they’re traversing the rocky outcroppings of Cinque Terre, touring the artistic highlights of Florence or sampling the food in Parma, visitors never leave disappointed. Given the variety in the country, if you’re planning a custom tour of Italy, it can be difficult to decide where to start, but Sorrento will always be a good choice. The coastal town has everything you could want and perhaps no destination is a better representation of the cosmopolitan lifeblood of Italy.

From the moment you step foot in Sorrento, you’ll recognize you made the right choice to visit the town of about 16,500 residents. Situated on the beautiful Amalfi Coast, Sorrento exudes an aura of relaxation. It’s hard not to be taken aback when you first lay your eyes upon the stunning views of the Bay of Naples, which you can see from seemingly every inch of this charming destination. Spending time on the beach or in the hotel pool is a great way to unwind soon after arriving, but you don’t want to pass up the opportunity to tour the Sorrento streets and visit many of its most historic landmarks.

Anyone planning a trip to Italy will undoubtedly be expecting to see some impressive pieces of architecture, and the Sorrento Cathedral certainly does not disappoint in that regard. It may not be the largest cathedral in Italy, but it’s hard to overstate the building’s historic and artistic significance. Originally built in the 11th century, Sorrento Cathedral is a beautiful building, but it’s what’s housed inside that makes it a must-see part of any time spent traveling through Italy. The interior is adorned with a number of beautiful frescoes that make Sorrento Cathedral an alluring attraction for both history and art buffs.

The history on display throughout the streets of Sorrento is undoubtedly impressive, but you’d be remiss if you didn’t take advantage of the natural appeal of the city and the surrounding coast. This is especially true when it comes to the island of Capri, which is located just a short ferry ride off the coast. A jaunt to Capri offers the chance to explore the world famous Blue Grotto. Filled with pristine, azure water, this beautiful cave has long been recognized for its seemingly eerie florescent glow. Though it used to be feared due to its mystery, swimming in the grotto will surely be an experience worth remembering.

It wouldn’t be a trip to Italy without having some of the local cuisine, and Sorrento certainly doesn’t disappoint in that regard, either. La Stalla is one of the city’s most famous restaurants, and for good reason. Whatever your Italian food of choice is, this spot is sure to serve of some of the best you’ve ever had, all in a beautiful setting.
