While every state has specific requirements for automobile insurance, this coverage is often not enough to pay for all the damage and injury from an accident. Many people have policies that are only the bare minimum required by the state. If you are in an accident with someone who does not have enough coverage, it is going to end up costing you a lot of money, even if you were not at fault for the accident.

Personal Injury

If you, or your passengers, have been injured in a motor vehicle accident, the medical bills that come from it can be quite steep. Even if you only had minor injuries, the costs can add up to well into the thousands of dollars. Most people do not realize that unless the party at fault has enough insurance coverage to pay for all the medical bills, you are going to end up paying for them yourself. Do not assume that everything will be covered. Do not assume your insurance company is going to get you the funds needed to pay the bills. Contact Bob M Cohen & Associates to find out what you can do about bills over the amount of coverage.

Expenses Other than Medical

When you are injured, there will be more financial worries than your medical bills. If you have lost time from work, you may not have any income at all until you are able to go back to work. There will also be damage to your car that may not be covered under the insurance policy. In some cases, your own insurance will kick in and pay for the damage or replace your car if it is totaled.

Your Insurance

It is always a good idea to have more insurance than you think you need. Pay the money to have uninsured/underinsured coverage so you do not have to pay out of pocket to have your car fixed. As far as personal injury, you can have additional personal injury protection that will pay for your medical bills even if you were at fault for the crash.

Legal Representation

When the accident goes to court, you need to have an attorney on your side. While you have your insurance company, and they will have legal representation, they are still not completely on your side. They often have multiple dealings with the other insurance company or may even be representing both you and the other driver. Having an attorney who does not have any other interest in the case except getting you all you deserve is the smartest thing to do.

You do not want to have to worry about finances while trying to heal after a car crash. If people you care about were also hurt in the accident, you want to make sure that they are taken care of as well. Do not just purchase the minimum insurance for your state, it is not going to be enough for all the expenses involved in an accident and you need the extra coverage for the people who are not smart enough to buy extra coverage.
