Food is one of the most important expenses in our households. A lot of money can disappear in our grocery bills if we do not act wisely as customers! Here are a few tips to help save money on food.

Buy Fruits in Season

Fruits are much cheaper when they are in season. Buy them in large quantities and freeze your leftovers. You’ll have delicious fruits all year long! A tip to freeze fruits: Place them on a tray in one layer (no fruits on top of one another) and freeze them like that. Then only place them in little boxes or plastic bags and store in the freezer. Your frozen fruit will keep their nice shape!

Stop Eating Out

Resist the temptation of eating out everyday for lunch or every week-end because you feel tired and (let’s admit it) a little lazy. Instead, take the habit of cooking your own meals. If you’re up for it, cook large quantities of your favorite dish once a week and pack it up for lunches. You’ll save tons of money by doing that.

Buy “No-Name” Products

Really, the no-name products are just as good as the famous brands’. Plus, often, they can be so much cheaper that you’ll pay half the price! Take the habit of buying them and watch how your grocery bill shrinks.

Eat Before You Go To The Grocery Store

Walking around the grocery store feeling hungry is bad for your wallet. You’ll want to buy everything that you see! Everything will become lunch, supper or snack material. Go grocery shopping after you ate a full meal.

Have Leftovers Dinner Parties

Your fridge is half empty and what’s left in there is not enough to fix a decent meal? Call your friends and have them check out what’s left in the bottom of their fridge. Together, throw a leftover dinner party: Everyone brings whichever leftover they have and you all come up with a meal idea that’ll combine all your food. Delicious and fun, on top of being thrifty!

Set Up a Little Home Garden

You don’t need to live in the countryside to grow vegetables at home. Granted, you won’t have a potato field on the roof of your downtown apartment. But you can easily grow small vegetables such as cherry tomatoes, radishes, carrots and even salad. Not to mention that fine herbs are also easily grown indoors: Basil, oregano, and dill…. Just pick your favorite and grow it at home!
