The grocery bill is one of the biggest chunks out of a family’s finances. Whether you’re buying fresh produce, frozen food, or toothpaste, coupons and coupon codes can save you a significant amount of money if you know how to use them. Most of us are familiar with online printable coupons, but what many people don’t know is how coupon codes can save you money on groceries, especially when you order online.

Coupon codes only work online.

If you live in an area where a grocery store isn’t convenient to get to, shopping online may be your best option. Some stores offer codes on delivery orders for specific items, like spaghetti sauce or coffee. Other codes offer free delivery over a certain amount purchased, or a dollar amount discounted off your purchase. Safeway, for example, has a coupon code for free delivery for purchases above $150. Each coupon code is normally for one item, and you can only use it once.

Do your research first.

You’ll spend a lot more money if you don’t do your due diligence. Make sure that the store or delivery service allows you to combine coupon codes to maximize your savings. Some will even let you use manufacturers’ coupons for added savings. Delivery service Peapod serves customers in the Midwest. The service offers comparable prices on products and doubles coupons up to 99 cents.

Search for the best codes.

Before you choose your online delivery service or store, search the Internet for the coupon codes you’re looking for. If you want codes for canned soup, enter “canned soup coupon codes” into the search engine. If there are any codes currently available, the best matches will pop up on the front page first. You can also type in the more generic “coupon code” if you haven’t decided where you’re going to shop yet. You’ll get more broad results, and you’ll spend some time sorting through the current and outdated codes.

Bookmark the best coupon code sites.

Some of the best coupon sites also have a coupon code section. Sign up for weekly or monthly notifications, and you’ll have access to hundreds of money saving codes immediately. You’ll save yourself a lot of time and headaches because you won’t have to search the Internet for just a few codes you might be able to use. Many of the biggest coupon sites have codes from everything from groceries to office supplies. For example, GoPromoCodes.com carries codes for cellular plans, office supply stores, Target codes, and even Starbucks. Other sites like Coupons.com offer both coupon codes and printable online coupons.

Visit coupon blogs.

Another excellent way to save money on online shopping is to find the best coupon blogs. These are generally run by individuals who are passionate about saving money and passing that information on to the public. One of the biggest blogs out there is www.thecouponmom.com, but there are several others that are just as good. Sign up using an email address specifically set up for getting coupon codes, free offers, and such from these sites and blogs. This way, you won’t crowd your regular inbox and you’ll have a convenient way of managing each offer or code you receive.

Now that you know you don’t have to make an inconvenient trip to the store to shop for groceries, you can start the process of saving money on your grocery bill. Once you get started, it becomes easier and easier, so the sooner you start, the more money you can tuck away from your kids’ college funds, a new car, or that dream vacation.
