| May 5, 2016

bbConcern for the environment is increasingly coming high on the agenda for both business and individuals. Everyone is more aware of the impact that humans are having on the planet and the things that can be done to help reduce this impact.

Whether you are starting a new business or just looking to make your current business greener, the following tips will help you achieve your goals.

  1. Printing

Several years ago many businesses started to talk about the paperless office. Unfortunately it is a great principle but not a practical possibility to be completely paperless; no matter how good it is for the environment.

10 Essential Considerations When Going Green in the Office

Get Everyone In The Office To Pitch In. Set up a suggestion box for green office ideas. Your coworkers will be more than happy to help out in greening the office.

However, it is possible to use digital documents much of the time and to consider whether you really need to print something or not. Records can be stored on hard drives or in the cloud instead of being printed, whilst even pdf files can now be digitally signed.

  1. Power

You may be surprised if you were to calculate the amount of electricity you use by leaving products on, or even in standby mode over night! If you are not using any piece of equipment for a length of time, turn it off.

You will benefit financially and the environment will benefit from the reduced production of electricity. Computers can be set to turn off automatically if not in use for a set period of time; this is a useful feature, environmentally, financially and for security.

  1. Waste

Your waste can simply be disposed off or it can be recycled.  You should encourage your employees to recycle everything, where possible. Separate the rubbish and recycling in your work place and speak to neighboring businesses regarding a joint collection; this will help you to keep costs down.

aaProvided the recycling containers are clearly marked and easily accessible you will be surprised at how easy it is to get your staff to recycle. Even waste food in the staff canteen can be collected and used to create a compost bin or a worm farm. There will always be people nearby who will be grateful for free compost!

As well as watching your waste you need to be keeping a track of what products are arriving and how they are packaged. The greener they are when they arrive the easier it will be for you to dispose of excess items in an environmentally friendly way.

It is best to speak to your suppliers and check their green credentials; you can always switch to a greener supplier.

  1. Electronics

The modern digital age produces an abundance of electronic devices which are regularly replaced, whether they are worn out or not. This can be exceptionally harmful to the environment and you should create a policy regarding the safe and appropriate disposal of these items.

With a small amount of research you are likely to find that you can either sell old phones and palm pilots and generate some additional income for the firm whilst allowing someone else to use the product.

Alternatively there are plenty of charities which operate recycling schemes specifically for electronic devices. You may even find that the manufacturer is prepared to take them back without charge.

  1. Education

It may not be possible to rebuild your work place with green materials or add solar panels to the roof. However, there are constantly new developments happening which are designed to help the environment.
