2015 – What all it has for wine investment

| March 24, 2015

pic1Wines are often defined by the area in which they come from. Burgundy is an excellent example of this. Wines can range drastically in price and quality depending upon whether they come from. Grand Cru’s come from the oldest vineyards and usually has the highest price tags. In recent years, these tags have put them well above the reach of the average wage.

A step down from these is the Premier Cru collection. These are named after the village they come from as opposed to the actual vineyard and, are more affordable than the Grand Cru’s.  There are many more Burgundy’s which are not so well established and so have much lower price tags. These can still have an excellent flavour and should not be dismissed easily.

Emerging trends

It may surprise some of you to know that the Brunello di Montalcino red wine about to be made available is from vines grown in 2010. This wine is known for a deep structure and complex tannins, and it comes from the Sangiovese grape in Italy. It is a particularly good when consumed with Pasta or braised beef – just a couple of the local delicacies. The wines currently being produced are of an excellent quality and are great value compared with the famous Bordeaux.

Bordeaux itself has not had a good experience over the last three years. Their wines have been fairly flat and 2013 was a particularly bad year. Purchases of Bordeaux have been consistently down over the last four years. Fortunately, early indications suggest that the 2014 crop shows a return to previous form. On top of this, there has been a good yield which will ensure enough wine is produced to create an attractive price again.

Is Bordeaux wine a good investment?

Bordeaux has the potential to be a good investment. Should the wine price drop it would be an attractive proposition to purchase a better quality wine than the previous few years have seen and at a better price. 2015 could actually become an exceptionally good year for Bordeaux. There are actually several Bordeaux’s which are well worth acquiring now:

  • The 2009 Chateau Poujeaux Moulis-en-Medoc has a smooth flavor where you can really taste the fruit packed into it. It is easy to drink with a rich flavour. In fact any Bordeaux from this region and this year will provide excellent value for money.
  • The 2007 Chateau Grand-Puy-Lacoste is an elegant wine combining hints of cedar, blackberry and violets to perfection. Another well-crafted wine which is easy on the palate.
  • The 2010 Chateau Talbot is a young wine so will need to be double decanted three hours before serving. It will then reward you with a generous fruity taste that will compliment a wide variety of food.

Burgundy has had much more success over the last three years and has enjoyed a steady climb in popularity. The reviews so far have suggested a texturally light wine with high acidity levels but still having a decent taste. Bugundy Grand Crus have experienced a steady increase in value over the last few years. The question really is how long will this rise continue.

The value of top wines such as DRC’s has been falling but this is not unexpected in a very small niche market and may have no effect on the Burgundy Grand Crus. Napa wine is from California and has been very consistent over the last few years. The quality levels have been excellent and sales have been steadily climbing. With the American economy showing steady growth and more consumers having disposable cash, this year looks set to continue the trend and should produce some excellent quality wines at reasonable prices.
