The 5 Greatest Money-Saving Inventions in History

saving money

There are a whole host of inventions which have impacted mankind for the better, yet some of the greatest inventions are those that help people keep cash in their wallet.  Here are 5 of the most impactful:

Insurance – Granted, most of us go about our merry lives without giving so much as a passing thought to insurance. That is until disaster strikes and unpredictable life events hit us at the most inopportune time.  Admittedly, the majority of us will give a lot more into insurance than we’ll ever receive, but it can be a god-send for those unfortunate souls among us.

Ceiling Fan – What a way to beat the summer heat! While air conditioning has found favor in modern times, a ceiling fan can circulate more air and at just a fraction of the cost of an air conditioner.  A common central air conditioner unit produces 3,500 watts of energy when operating.  Conversely, a typical celling fan emits only 60 watts of energy, even when on its highest setting.

Here’s one celling fan “hack” for you to try. The majority of celling fans have a “clockwise” setting and a counterclockwise position, each designated for a specific season.   Try this experiment – Stand directly beneath your fan and activate it. If you feel an instant gust of wind, then its set on the “summer” setting, which is generally counterclockwise.  If you don’t experience a breeze, switch the fan off, make your way up to the fan’s base and set the switch so the fan spins in the opposite direction.

Public Transportation – Sure, riding in your own automobile can get you to your destination quicker than taking a bus, but the money you’ll save on gas taking public transportation adds up fast.  As an extra bonus you don’t have to worry about vehicle upkeep!

The Internet – With the advent of this technological invention, no longer are shoppers relegated to shopping at a few select local stores. Certain websites even let you compare prices of your favorite items.  Additionally, the this modern day invention allows individuals to work from home and even buy food from the comfort of their own couch, which in turn, eliminates the need to purchase gas!

Digital Camera – Perhaps no other money-saving invention has evolved more over the last 200 years.  Once upon a time, recording a moment in time required sitting around for extended periods of time while someone painted it. Fortunately, as time progressed and technology evolved, we were able to enlist the aid of photo developers to develop our photos. The only problem is, developers routinely charged  at least 20 cents per photo for their services. Thankfully, the digital camera made it possible to store all of your memories on your phone for an infinite amount of time at a negligible cost.
