Repairing Your Shattered Ipad: A Costly Replacement

| December 13, 2012

A shattered iPad screen can set you back a pretty penny if you want it repaired. The screen alone is not serviceable by Apple, since they do not cater to repairs of your screen.

iPad Repair and Replacement

Apple will instead choose to offer you a refurbished iPad in exchange for your broken iPad. This comes at an extra surcharge that is not covered by Apple’s warranty of the iPad. You may instead choose to go to a third party repair shop. The repair shop can often repair your screen at the expense of your warranty on the iPad. When you go through Apple, they will transfer the remainder of your warranty to the refurbished iPad.

Self Repair of iPad

A second option may be the repair of the iPad itself. You can do this manually; however, the difficulty in repairing the device itself is astounding. The iPad was not meant to be serviced as the only way to get into the device is by heating up the adhesive that holds the screen in place. Also while this option may be cheaper, it will not be without higher risk to the rest of your iPad. When you self repair your iPad, you are more likely to harm other components.

Cost of Ipad Repair

The process of going through Apple can total between 219$ and 419$. If you have the extended coverage plan, that costs an additional 99$ at time of purchase for your iPad, you may be able to get a replacement iPad for as little as 49$. Depending on when you purchased your iPad, it may be a better option to sell your iPad. iPad replacement through Apple will also get rid of all the data you had on your iPad. It would be a good decision to back up all of your work data or files on your device before sending it in for servicing. Third party retailers will often make you wait until they receive the product to give you a quote. This quote could end up being more than the cost of the replacement depending on the business.

Benefits of Selling Your iPad

You may opt to not repair your iPad at all. It may be more beneficial for you to just sell it to someone or a company that buys used electronics. You will have to find a site that buys damaged electronics back,  the quotes you receive will vary; as not many companies deal in damaged goods. The number of people seeking to buy damaged goods is even less than the companies willing to buy them. The shops that do accept your damaged goods will probably repair them to resell them later to the general population. But this is the only way of making your money back from your costly investment and any return on your is better than none.

Your Ipad, Your Decision

In the end the decision is up to what suits you best, but in the case of not having an extended warranty on your iPad; It is best to sell iPad for a return on your investment. The repairs will often void your warranty and you may decide that it is not worth the possible damage to other components while the service is ongoing.
