Staying in shape is key to staying healthy, which will not only help you to feel better but will also help you to save money by reducing the number of doctor’s visits you have to have. However, staying fit can be expensive all by itself.  Whether you hire a personal trainer or just opt for a membership at a gym, that’s an extra expense that many people cannot afford.

You don’t to spend a lot of money to get fit. Here are a few tips for how you can get in shape on a budget:

Eat Right

A large part of your fitness is based on the foods you eat. Simply by eating healthy foods, you can maintain a healthy weight without ever having to exercise. Choose all-natural, whole foods, including plenty of fresh produce and lean meats. Eating a clean diet will give you the right foundation to build a healthy lifestyle.

Run Outside

The best cardio you can do comes from simply putting one foot in front of the other repeatedly and very quickly. You don’t have to hire a trainer or have access to an expensive treadmill. You just need to run — and you can do that anywhere. Running is one of the best ways to get in shape, and it is totally free.

Do Workout Videos

If running’s not your thing, or you just need a little variety, try working out at home with workout videos. There are hundreds of selections created by some of the best-known fitness experts to give you an efficient workout in a short period of time. You can work up a sweat in the privacy of your own living room, and in most cases, it will have cost you less than $20.

Buy Your Own Fitness Equipment

If you’ve got a little more money to spend, you can buy your own fitness equipment to create a home gym. You don’t have to install a full gym in your house — one or two pieces should be enough, such as a treadmill and a weight bench. While these items can be expensive, the cost of a gym membership over the life of these items can end up being much more.

Barter Services

Bartering is making a comeback. If you need professional guidance to get you on the right track, or if you just prefer to work out in a more formal environment to get you motivated, you might consider talking to a trainer or a local gym about the possibility of bartering your services. You might be a good writer or an excellent web designer or have another skill, and you may be able to trade your services for personal training sessions or even a gym membership for a certain number of months.

Getting in shape doesn’t have to break the bank. You can use these simple tips to create  a healthier lifestyle while also saving money and maintaining healthy finances.
