English: "Liberty Loans" (pawn shop)...

Letting go of somebody that you love is difficult when they mean so much to you. You can make this somewhat insurmountable challenge that little bit less devastating by donating to a cause they heavily believed in, as a way of honoring their final wishes. That’s what bereaved Mary Coletta did when her veteran father passed away, we have learnt

WWII Veteran and Medic Hero

Mrs Coletta is the daughter of Peter Browning, who died in 2006 of old age, and who served in WWII as a medic.  One thing that Mr Browning always cared in and believed about was that those people who were casualties of wars – whether soldier or civilian – were treated with the best care and medical attention, and it was this attitude, along with having the utmost respect for his patients, which won him the Medal of Honour, which he wore very infrequently, but which was placed in pride of place on his living room mantle place.

Honoring Memories

According to Mrs Coletta and all that knew him, Mr Browning was a war hero, and a person who championed intervening in causes all around the world until the day he passed away. This is what gave Mary the idea of giving back to the cause her father had always believed in: Help for Heroes.

For those who aren’t aware, Help for Heroes is a UK-based charity which was established with the aim of providing those who had served – or been effected by – war financial support and social care.  This is a charity which Mr Browning himself had been supported by, and supportive of, all throughout his life, so given the opportunity, Mrs Coletta and her family were very happy to help the charity out on behalf of a person who cared so much for it.

Helping Heroes at the Pawn Shop

Mr Browning’s family took his Medal of Honour to a pawn shop and traded it in for cash for charity.  Although Mrs Coletta did not wish to disclose the total amount which the medal fetched, they did say they were able to donate a 4-figure amount to Help for Heroes, and that they were “over the moon” with how much they were able to raise for a cause which Mr Browning cared so much about.

If you’d like to do something generous this year, why not donate some of your own possessions to a cause which you feel passionately about.  There are pawnbrokers in every town and city, and specialists like the ones at H and T Pawn Brokers are experts in valuation, so you’ll always feel like you’re getting a good deal.
