Are You Getting the Tax Rebate You Deserve?

| September 3, 2013

tax returnTax rebates can be wonderful things. Waking up to a letter which promises you an unexpected sum of money is sure to put a smile on anyone’s face. But what if you never get to experience this pleasant feeling? There are many people out there who aren’t getting the tax rebates they deserve, through no fault of their own. And if you think you might be one of them – read on.

How Tax Rebates Work

A tax rebate occurs when a person has paid too much on their taxes. This overpayment can occur for any number of reasons, from your being allocated the wrong tax code to your being placed on emergency tax after you change jobs. But whatever the reasons, if you’ve overpaid on tax then you are legally entitled to claim that money back. But sometimes, these errors aren’t automatically found and corrected, which is when you need to be able to find the information you need to claim back the tax you deserve.

Assessing Your Tax Status

If you think you’re owed a rebate, or you’ve been given one but it looks suspiciously small, then it’s important for you to know how much it is that you are actually owed. If you’ve kept a track of your finances and have all of your records on hand, that’s a really great start. Otherwise, it’s worth having a word with your bank and any companies that you’ve worked for in the past 2 to 3 years, in order to obtain as much evidence of your financial status as possible. These documents will show you exactly how much you’ve paid in tax during that time, and can be used as evidence if you decide to pursue a claim. By examining your current payslip, or P45, you should be able to find out what tax code you’re currently under. If this is wrong, it can make a big difference to the value of your rebate, as well as your future tax contributions.

Talk to the Professionals

If you’re finding it a bit of a struggle to go through the tax rebate claim process by yourself, there are plenty of tax rebate services available, who can guide you through the process or even make a claim for a rebate on your behalf. This type of service is great news for anyone who’s unsure about how the system works, or who is simply too busy to go through the process of claiming a rebate.
